My favorite books are the one where I feel like I can identify with the characters and emotions that are explored. The imperfect people in this book are so believable and familiar that they could be folks in your own family, your neighbors, your friends, maybe even a little bit of yourself. You root for them through their ups and downs you hurt with them during the difficult times and you are hopeful throughout. Liesl Wilke has a beautiful ability to display just how human these characters are - with all of their imperfections and wrong turns - but, still have forgiveness, acceptance and love as the overarching theme that runs through the story.I was drawn in from the first page and couldn't stop reading until the very end. In fact, I was sad when it ended...I want to know what happens next to these wonderful characters!

Circle Of Three Liesl D Wilke 9781449513870 Books Reviews
A captivating and delicious read, appealing both as it details the life of a parent to children in their early 20's, and as it details the life and thinking of those early 20's "kids." The concept of a circle of three, rather simple at first glance as one imagines three points in space that are connected by a circle, grows rich and multifaceted in Wilke's hands, and I found especially appealing the way the book repeatedly refutes a reader's temptation to turn the circle into a triangle, with two against one. This theme plays out with many of the characters and situations in the book, and the satisfying culmination of the book is in Wilke finding the connection rather than opposition of the characters. That said, it sounds very pat and simplistic; quite the contrary, it took me down thoughtful paths in my own life about how circles of three interact and resolve.
I found the Paul character sometimes a bit unclear and hard to comprehend, there seemed to be information lapses and occasional contradictions that kept him from being a compelling character. On the other hand, the two girls were rich, nuanced, and a pleasure to get to know. I can see how they were confused by their father; I was too. But I strongly recommend the book on the strength of those two striving young women.
Wilke writes with an ear for the modern world and contemporary language. I appreciated that her book was, by turns, a kind of mass market romance and a true family drama. It was light and fun and serious and compelling. Nice work author!
More please, Liesl Wilke.
Maybe because "Circle of Three" is about a parent of college age children (like me) who despite his best efforts has made some mistakes, or maybe because it is about sisters (I am a sister) and their complex relationship, or maybe because its characters are so well drawn and believable, I had no trouble identifying with almost everyone in the story. This is a tight little book, with something for everyone mystery, romance, suspense, a little humor, coming of age, and a beautifully rendered sense of place. I had a hard time putting it down.
I'm a big fan of Lionel Shriver and Jane Austen in equal measure, as well as J.K. Rowling and Gillian Flynn, and Liesl Wilke fits right into my pantheon. She creates a family dynamic in transition a father helpless to stop time and as it carries his daughters into adulthood, ready or not; two very different young women and what happens when their hopes and dreams confront the not-always-rosy reality. I like Wilke's smart dialogue, and the way she allows her characters to be imperfect, to make dumb choices, and to forgive each other.
If you like stories with strong female characters, stories about familial love and forgiveness, and you might have children in college, so you are thinking about youth and aging and love and romance and mistakes and disappointment, and you still want a little suspense and mystery in your fiction, then read this book, you'll probably like it.
Once I started reading Circle of Three, I couldn't put it down. I was constantly on edge as to what would happen with each of these characters, as it doesn't tie up in a nice neat bow. It's very real -- the characters and their actions -- so I felt like I was actually experiencing their lives with them. Would love to read more about these characters and more from Liesl Wilke in general!
